Star Spangled Banner Comes to Auction
June 8, 2011
On June 21st, Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas will be holding their Arms & Militaria auction. The sale will include two fragments of the original Star Spangled Banner that flew over Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, MD in 1812. There is a hope that these fragments will reach a price of $60,000 or more with the hope that one of the fine American institutions picks up this rare piece of history. The original Star Spangled Banner now resides in Washington D.C. in the National Museum housed within the Smithsonian.
Dennis Lowe, Director of Arms & Militaria at Heritage said, “There is no American symbol more potent than our flag. There is no version of our flag more important than the Star Spangled Banner. These fragments are a part of our collective history, and should be valued as such by serious collectors of Americana.”
