Marilyn Monroe's dress appraised for $4.6 Million
June 21, 2011
After an impressive sale weekend, Profiles in History held a sale of over 600 costumes and film memorabilia in Beverly Hills, California. The collection has been amassed by actress Debbie Reynolds throughout the decades and with the failed hope of a museum, the collection came to auction this past saturday.
The sale highlight was the auctioning off of Marilyn Monroe's white William Travilla "subway" dress from the movie "the Seven Year Itch". The dress was estimated at $1-2 million and ended up fetching $4.6 million.
Other impressive and iconic pieces included Audrey Hepburn's Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady" which was estimated at $200,000-300,000 but realized $3.7 million. Judy Garland's blue Dorothy dress from "The Wizard of Oz" sold for $910,000. The black gown of Madonna's from "Evita" reached $22,500 from an estimate or only $4,000-6,000.
