London Islamic Sales Start with High Values

April 13, 2011

On April 4th at Morton and Eden Auctions, the record was set for an Islamic coin selling for £3.1 million. The sale that showcased 81 Islamic coins acquired the Umayyad gold dinar of Hegira (723AD). The piece was given an estimate of 300,000-400,000.

With the selling price of £3.1 million this coin became the most expensive Islamic coin as well as the second most expensive gold coin ever sold at auction. The piece was bought by an unknown European collector.

Although coins similar to this are somewhat common and go for between £100 – 350, this coin had a specific engraving saying that it was from the personal gold mine of the Caliph himself in the Hijaz (meaning the leader of the pilgrimage to Mecca).
