High coin price for £2.6m item

June 28, 2010

An auction in Vienna has seen the largest gold coin in the world sell for $4 million (£2.6 million).

It measures 53 cm in diameter and was sold to a Spanish metals firm, according to Dorotheum.

The item found the new owners following the instruction of an Austrian administrator, which was acting on behalf of a bankrupt investment group.

Furthermore, the large sum accrued may reflect the current global demand for gold.

The Maple Leaf coin was made by Canadian Mint in 2007 and bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II.

News of the purchase might inspire anyone seeking a high coin price upon valuation.

Meanwhile, those with a love for shiny collectibles might have noted that Fellows & Sons will host the Wrist & Pocketwatch auction in Birmingham from July 5th.

The event may catch the attention of anyone seeking clocks and watches valuations and will feature a variety of rare Rolex timepieces.
