Chinese bowl with £500 antique price guide sells for £38k

September 8, 2010

A Chinese porcelain bowl which had been given an antique price guide of £600 has sold for £38,000 at auction today (September 8th).

The item - believed to be a Victorian-era reproduction of the kind of highly-prized Kangxi dynasty china made in the early 18th century - has a picture of a man ploughing a paddy field on it with water buffalo, the Daily Mail reports.

This news might inspire others to get antique appraisals on their possessions after pictures of the eight-inch wide product were posted on the internet and sparked interest from China.

Auctioneer Steven Moore, a senior specialist at Anderson & Garland, said he didn't believe it was an original but because the images were circulated across the world the item reached the price it's actually worth.

Other porcelain items to recently cause a stir after going under the hammer include a toilet once owned by Beatles star John Lennon - it sold for £9,500.
