Candle Sconces Valued at £74,000
April 19, 2011
Last week at Colchester Auction a pair of silver wall-hanging candle sconces were sold. They have been dated to c. 1680 and brought in lots of early interest from private collectors and dealers. They have a maker’s mark of ‘IR’ and were found in a local house in Stratford St Mary. The total price for the pair was £74,000 (hammer price +17.5% buyers commission).
Historically before the sale the family used these fittings for electric wall lights. They have been deemed to be of Carolean silver, which is a rare find at auction. With an estimate of £6,000-8,000, it was a remarkable surprise for Colchester to reach the £74,000 mark.
The sconces went with a private trader from London through a telephone bid.
