Andy Warhol self-portrait outdoes antiques valuation to sell for over £10.7m
February 17, 2011
A self-portrait by legendary artist Andy Warhol has gone under the hammer for more than double its antiques valuation.
The item - which had a pre-sale estimate of up to £5 million - was sold for $17.4 million (£10.79 million) at a Christie's auction in London.
It was created in 1967 and shows Warhol with his hand in his mouth.
Francis Outred, co-head of contemporary and post-war art at Christie's, stated the work was of "historic importance" and he noted it was "incredibly exciting" to be able to be able to handle such an item.
What's more, it had been in the hands of a private collector since 1974, 13 years before the artist died in 1987.
This comes after another Warhol painting, which depicted a black and white canvas of a Coca-Cola bottle - beat its antiques valuation of $20 million and $25 million last year to sell for $35.36 million.
