3 Dollar Coin Bought For 1 Million
August 15, 2011
Heritage Auctions held a two day sale of American coins ending on August 12th with the Signature(r) U.S. Coin & Platinum Night Auction. At the auction, a record was set for the highest price paid for a coin during the whole sale. A very well preserved 1855-S $3 coin from the Golden Gate Collection achieved a price tag of $1,322,500! The whole sale saw over 7,000 lots sold with a grand total of just over $30 million.
The president of Heritage Auctions, Greg Rohan said, "Collectos are continuing to come to heritage to persue the top rarities that we gather for each auction and non-traditional buyers are looking to temper their portfolios against the tumult of world financial markets. The combination resulted in final figures that were nothing short of remarkable."
